The University of Nevada, Reno anthropology research department designs and installs exhibits on campus and in the community. Through fellowships and grants the department uses the museum to instruct students in how to operate a museum. Its primary function is for education and research.Darla Gary Sage, a research assistant, has the current fellowship to run the museum. She said the anthropology department receives funding every other semester.

Kathleen Fowler and Donald Hardesty, anthropology professors at the university, serve as curators of the museum. Students interested in learning how a museum works should enroll in Anthropology 480/680: Museum Training for Anthropologists.

The class instructs students in processing and preservation of anthropology collections, designing exhibits as well as learning curatorial responsibilities and how to do museum research. This class is open to all majors. Students such as art majors who may want to run a museum after graduation are encouraged to enroll.The museum is open when a student intern is available. This position is open to anthropology majors and non-majors alike.

Simply contact the anthropology department at 784-6704 or the University Internship Office at 784-4762 for further information.Gary Sage said the current exhibit was donated from Bank of America to the University of Nevada, Reno. Moe and Mary Royel of Fernley, Nev. originally collected it. This exhibit is primarily made up of models of Northern Paiute artifacts.
