Nevada State Museum

The museum is the former United States Branch Mint building where coins were minted from 1870 to 1893, all bearing the mintmark "CC," for Carson City. The Carson City Mint stopped coining operations in 1893 and the presses were removed in 1899. The "Coin Press No. 1" and a complete set of Carson City minted coins are on display on the museum's first floor.

Through the efforts of Judge Clark J. Guild and other local businessmen, the antique press was purchased by the state of Nevada for $225 in 1958 from the mint in San Francisco. After it was cleaned and painted, it became one of the favorite attractions in the Nevada State museum.

Don Schmitz, owner of the Nevada City, Calif., Mint, operates the press the last Friday of every month. He and his son, Kenneth, stamp out the commemorative medallions, which are available for purchase in the museum's store.
