ARTown
gears up for its fifth year
by Lisa Aland,
Outpost staff
- In five years, Uptown Downtown ARTown has
accomplished a goal the city has worked at for 30 years -
helping to revitalize downtown and the Truckee River
Corridor. Throughout July, the Summer Arts Festival
offers over 200 events by local arts organizations at
several locations citywide. The product is an eclectic
blend of culture."

- "We want to create a philosophy in the community to
be interested in experiences," Karen Craig, Executive
Director of ARTown said. "We want Reno to be known as a
community interested in learning, in the kind of people
we are and the society we create."
-
- Craig said she believes the arts create the link for
that to happen.
-
- ARTown was selected by the American Bus Association
as one of the top 100 events in 2000. Only two events
were selected from Nevada. ABA selects events from the
United States and Canada. ARTown was also awarded the
U.S. Conference of Mayors "Outstanding Achievement Award
for City Livability" in 1998.
-
- It reached another milestone when attendance topped
102,000 in 1999.
-
- "Reno -- former divorce mecca, now the alternative to
Las Vegas... and the Paris of Northern Nevada," VIA
Magazine said.
-
- ARTown has proven there is more to Reno than skiing,
divorce and casino gaming by showing the art and soul of
the community during July. This year's highlights include
the Coeur d'Alene Art Auction, Kronos Quartet, Little
Shop of Horrors, Nevada Opera Extravaganza and Project
Bandaloop. This year will also feature the third season
of Movies in the Park.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show is a
favorite among the movies shown in the park.

Warp" each year.

-
- "One of the best nights of my summer was being under
the stars watching 'Wizard of Oz' with my family," Jerri
Conrad, a Reno resident said.
-
- ARTown offers several scenic sites to enjoy events
including the Truckee River Island Amphitheater, concert
halls, the University of Nevada campus, historic
churches, hotels, parks, shopping malls, street corners
and stately mansions all over Reno. The festival will be
held July 1-31.
-
- Most events suit all ages and are free or low cost.
ARTown is hosted by the City of Reno. For more
