Official Wolf Pack volleyball

The Wolf Pack women's volleyball team heads into its Oct. 21 matchup with UC Santa Barbara on a four match winning streak after a tough five game loss at New Mexico State. The young Pack team, which features only three seniors, now stands atop the Big West's eastern division with a 6-2 record. Coach Devin Scruggs has guided the team to a 16-3 overall record, with losses only to UNLV, Pacific and New Mexico State. The super play of senior setter Alanna Whitnack and senior middle blockers Elena Berman and Tara Pollak have vaulted the Pack into the ranks of the volleyball elite.

Now the Pack squad faces their biggest challenge so far this year, the fourth ranked UC Santa Barbara Gauchos. The Pack's chances are helped by being in front of the home crowd, and by an injury to the Gauchos star, Katie Crawford. The match against UCSB opens a four match homestand for the Pack. The Pack plays Cal-Poly SLO Saturday, Oct. 24. Then the Pack takes on North Texas (Thursday, Oct. 29) and New Mexico State (Saturday, Oct. 31). All games start at 7 p.m. in the Old Gym.

To the casual observer, volleyball is a fast-paced game with simple rules and smooth flow of play. However, behind the simplicity of the sport is the complexity of the skills and strategies involved. In the next four pages the key parts of volleyball will be explained in detail.
