Candidate Dan Carne compares the school district to the balloon races to describe how he sees the current state of the education system in Washoe County. "Like the balloon races, every balloon is a different size, shape and color, and that is how the schools are," Carne said. "When they take off, they're in unison, but they go off in different directions."
"We have to be sure we support the school that gets ahead, but at the same time, ask the school having a problem getting started how can we help." The school board recently accepted the State of Nevada's new standards for math, reading, science and social studies. Carne said that making these standards come to fruition would be a priority for him. "It's a team effort," Carne said. "We can't just tell the teachers to try harder and walk away. We need to foster an attitude where teachers feel they're being supported, but where they may need to work a little more to meet the standards." Carne's wife is a teacher and they have been involved over the years with the Parent-Teachers Association and Wooster High School Boosters. He said his children were born here and went to schools in the Reno area. Carne, a graduate of Oklahoma State University with a bachelor's in architecture, was also asked to serve on the district's school overcrowding taskforce, the committee to select a new associate superintendent in 1998 and on the current rezoning committee. Carne wants to be a part of "helping to develop a world-class system where everyone is excited -- teachers, parents and students."
