Devere Dressler has the ultimate responsibility for all aspects of the business of the cattle ranch. He is up early in the morning and sometimes far into the night caring for animals and working on projects that have to be finished before the next day breaks. Devere’s main priority is the cattle. He makes sure they are properly fed and kept healthy. Though he’s not a veterinarian, if an animal gets injured or sick on the ranch Devere will be the first to “doctor” it. Even after the animals are tended to, Devere’s tasks never seem to end. Living on a century and a half old ranch with many of its original buildings, Devere is in a constant cycle of repairing ranch barns and workshops, as well as the Victorian house they live in. Devere also repairs and operates most of the equipment on the ranch. Devere says he enjoys the variety of his life as a rancher because of all its challenges that a person might not experience in a single profession.
Devere's wife, Laura, as a self proclaimed “city
girl,” has
found her own role on the ranch. In addition to working as a nurse
at the local hospital, she does many of the homemaker chores at the
ranch. She puts most of the meals on the table and makes sure that
things are in order. Like Devere, Laura says her job never seems to
end. She finds herself outside on the ranch doing chores as much as
she can to help her family.
Young Garrett has his own responsibilities on the ranch.
He has daily chores, which begin when he gets home from school, starting
with feeding the horses. Along with his daily routine Garrett helps
his mother and father in special tasks like cutting firewood or gathering
cattle.
