Warren Lerude on the importance of internships
Internships are one of the most valuable learning experiences for Reynolds School of Journalism students. Internships provide hands on experience for students working closely with professional mentors in newspapers, magazines, advertising agencies, PR agencies, on-line companies. Many of the mentors are our graduates and once served internships themselves. So they are more than familiar with the program which is one of the oldest internship programs in U.S. journalism education.
All journalism majors are required to do at least one internship. But students may do, on a voluntary basis, two more internships for greater experience. Kristin Go, a l998 graduate, interned each summer after her freshman, sophomore and junior years at newspapers ranging from the community daily in Gilroy, Calif., to the metropolitan Dallas Morning News in Texas. The result: upon graduation, she was sought after by major newspapers and she elected to join the staff of the Denver Post where she participated in the winning of a Pulitzer Prize for the Columbine coverage. She was then hired away from Denver to the Arizona Republic in Phoenix. Her internships positioned her for what has become a very successful career and a promising future.
We encourage our students to visit with all faculty members about the value of internships. As coordinator of the program, I look forward to visiting with students at any time about how to secure internships and how to make them work best for you.
