Dear
Journalism Internship Mentor:
Thank you
for your participation in the Reynolds School of Journalism internship
program. By making your time,
talent and place of work available to our students, you are helping us provide
a quality education and helping our students create work project samples that
they can show to prospective employers.
This
program is designed to take the student into your professional atmosphere.
We monitor
internships closely, asking that the interns keep a log of their daily
experiences and report to us on a weekly basis. We hope the internship will
provide meaningful work experiences with guidance from the mentor.
Additionally,
we ask that you, as the student's mentor, provide us with evaluations on the
performance of the students: one midway through the internship and the other at
the end. The intern should
establish these dates with you.
Forms for these reports are enclosed.
We ask that
you discuss these evaluations with the student. The student is responsible for
turning the evaluation into the school.
We believe that mentors may gain valued insight by seeking the intern's
feedback on the experience.
Also,
enclosed for your information are copies of materials that are provided to the
intern.
To complete
the internship, the student must work a minimum of 120 hours for one credit in
one of our programs, or 150 hours for three credits in another program. The schedule is to be worked out
between you and the student.
We
encourage mentors to compensate our interns. Compensation recognizes that services are being performed,
helps the student with tuition, and sets out a realistic employer-employee
relationship. Some mentors
compensate interns through salary, scholarship or tuition cost. Please
telephone Barbara Trainor at (775) 784-4194 with questions regarding
scholarships or tuition payment.
Please call
me at my office (775) 784-4192 or at home (775) 322-8400 if I can be of further
assistance.
Sincerely,
Warren
