Testimonials

Kaity Ocean

Nevada Museum of Art Kaity Ocean

I worked for the communications, development and membership departments, and learned a lot about being flexible and working on several different tasks. I learned how an organization's different departments work together behind the scenes. I liked working on a variety of projects, however I feel like I could have used more time learning specifics for the field I am interested in, public relations. Some advice I would give to other students planning an internship is to set up your internship and make sure it's confirmed AHEAD OF TIME! Some people out in the "real world" don't feel bad flaking on you. As you can tell, this happened to me.

Trisha Borucki

KRNV-TV, Channel 4 in Reno and Channel 13, the NBC affiliate in Las Vegas

Trisha BoruckiMy first internship was at KRNV-TV, Channel 4 in Reno, Nev. It was a good internship, because they let me do hands on writing for the 5, 6 and 11 o'clock news and there was always a chance that my stuff would be aired.

This summer I'm going to be interning with NBC affiliate Channel 13 in Las Vegas. This is exciting because this is going to be a bigger market and I'll still get the hands on experience. They're also going to help me with resume tape by letting me use their equipment and by giving me pointers.

My tip for future interns is to start early by making contacts and looking for possible internships and be professional in everything you do.

Johnathan L. Wright

Wright is a graduate student who has had several internships, three of which he highlights below.

Johnathan L. Wright"Mirabella"

A fashion magazine founded by the former editor-in-chief of "Vogue." Fun internship. Glamorous, but not very substantive. I spent a lot of time making appointments for people and going to parties to keep up on the buzz.

"Nevada Appeal"

Carson City, Nev., newspaper. This internship really helped to improve my interviewing and reporting skills. I did real stories from day one.

"GalleryRow.com"

I wanted a dot-com internship on my resume and now I have it. This firm pretty much tanked along with so many other dot-coms.

My tip for prospective interns is to be prepared. Make sure your clips look professional. Have someone who does cover letters and resumes help you.

Rich Wood

100.9 KRZQ

Rich WoodI interned with KRZQ and now I'm working there permanently. I've gotten a lot of hands on experience with editing, production and dealing with clients. I'll probably stay with KRZQ until I graduate, then I'll begin looking for work at an advertising agency. My tip for students thinking about an internship is to talk to everybody you have contact with. The most remote source or co-worker may still have information that might help you.

Seema Bhardwaj

Reno Gazette-Journal

I worked as a business reporter through the Dow Jones Newspaper Fund. I was trained in New York for a week and then I was placed with the Reno Gazette-Journal. It wasn't perfect, but I really ended up liking business writing. I liked covering the small business aspect of Reno. The Reno Gazette-Journal was good about letting me enterprise stories. Being a college student, I presented them with some news stories that they might not have covered without my suggestion. You can cover what you want that way. I would advise that other students looking for internships talk to the faculty and tell them what you want -- then they can tell you what they know of as far as internships. Also, go to Web sites of places you want to work and e-mail them.

Michelle Faber

Lilliput Motor Company

Michelle FaberI interned with Lilliput Motor Company in Reno. I worked on the company's catalog, editing images of products, getting them ready for the catalog and writing copy. I did a lot of layout and design. It would have been more worthwhile if I was interested in going into catalog work. I'd advise that students looking for internships do a lot of networking. Get out there and meet people and they can help you find new and different positions.

Abbi Holtom

Switchback Public Relations and Marketing

Abbi HoltomIt's a great internship. The people there are energetic and full of creativity. The lady I work for is so experienced and willing to answer all of my questions. I have learned so much. I have done press clippings, written, created public relations books, used the database system compiling media contact lists and made follow up calls. If I was to give other students advice about internships it would be to find out all about the organization before you begin working there. Know exactly what you're going to do, so you can make sure it's worthwhile for what you want to do.

Joe Camarlinghi

KOLO-TV Reno, Channel 8

Joe CamarlinghiI worked in the sports department for Channel 8. I shot a lot of high school basketball with the sports caravan and in the end I got to shoot some UNR Baseball. I did a lot of shooting and editing. If you're going into broadcast call around to the local stations because you never know who might be offering internships. Talk to the people in your clubs and your sequence classes. The students in them may already have had internships and can help you find what you want.

Kathi Buzzetti

College of Agriculture, Biochemistry and Natural Resources
Public Relations and Development Department

Kathi BuzzettiI love my internship. It's so exciting because I work with a woman who has so much experience and passion for what she's doing. The PR and Development Department has only been around for about one year so we are just beginning everything and it's so exciting to be a part of that. I've learned so much about fundraising and layout and design. Advice for other students interning: if you know what field you want to go into, talk to people in that area. Let everyone know what your interests are so if anyone hears of anything that they think fits you they can let you know about it.

Karly Imus

Times Newspapers, Cape Cod Times and Detroit Free Press

Karly ImusI've had two internships, one after my freshman year at a weekly newspaper in suburban Portland, Ore., and the second after my sophomore year at the Cape Cod Times, a daily in Hyannis, Mass., with a circulation of about 70,000.

I'm going to the Detroit Free Press in summer 2001 as a Dow Jones Copy Editing intern. The point of all this is ... work your way up if you have to. Start out at a small paper where you can write a lot of stories and do some editing so you'll be in a better position to get hired at a larger paper after your junior or senior year. Don't put off getting internships. You'll regret it in the long run.
