Reynolds School of Journalism Internship Coordinator: Send internship email to rsjintern@unr.edu | Tips for finding internshipsHere are some suggestions by faculty and staff of the school of journalism: by Warren Lerude...
The best tip about internships is for the student to think about where you would want to go to work on some rainy Monday morning after college life has ended, where would the enjoyment be, where would the adventure be, where would the genuine public service be? Think. Where? That is where you should intern, perhaps it is a creative ad agency, perhaps a busy, hectic newsroom, television or newspaper, perhaps it is helping volunteer groups or professional organizations through smart public relations. Whatever. Be selfish. Think of what is right for you. Then, do it. Seek out the internship, take a chance, run the risk and put what you have learned at our school of journalism on the line. It may be a bit of a scary run. But do it. You'll be delighted to realize how much you know and how well you fit in. You are in charge of your internship. The mentor is there to help you. But you create your destiny in the internship. And it will lead to learning, joy, disappointment, some victory, a little failure, a lot of uncertainty and a lot more confidence as you take on the professional challenge. And, the nice thing, is you always have your fellow students, your colleagues and your professors at the Reynolds School of Journalism a quick e-mail or phone call away to help when it is really raining on that Monday morning.

by Mary Caulk...Aim high. Talk to the professors in your sequence and go out and get the internship you want. Don't be intimidated by anything. by Ethel Kirk...This is where advisement comes in. Your adviser can help with recommendations and always clear everything with Warren Lerude. by Bourne Morris...Look at the bulletin boards for available internships. I have all the names and addresses of the ad agencies in Nevada on my bulletin board. Then students can take that information and contact who they'd like to intern with. by Paul Mitchell... by Jim Ellis...Use your membership in the PRSSA to develop networking opportunities through the Professional Partners Program. Through the PRSSA you will meet members of the professional community that know of and provide internships. Know what kind of public relations you want to do and get that kind of experience. Make some critical decisions about your interest and where they might lie and then explore your opportunities in this area. by Mike Carrigan...First of all know what you want to do. Make sure you start saving your clips and make a portfolio of your journalistic writing. Be professional, show up dressed nice and be courteous. This is one of the only majors at the University of Nevada, Reno that you actually work in before you graduate. Don't be afraid to network and ask someone to help you find an internship.
