Problems attributed to computer use:

  • Eye strain
  • Vision problems, i.e. blurred vision, double vision, conjunctivitis (itchy, bloodshot eyes)
  • Dry or irritated eyes
  • Headaches
  • Muscle stress and joint problems
  • Back pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome nerve damage resulting from repetitive hand motions and joint posture associated with constant typing or mouse use. Symptoms: intense pain and lessened motor control in the wrists and hands.

    Causes:

  • Ergonomically incorrect workstations
  • Extended periods of computer use without breaks or exercise
  • Improper positioning of the monitor
  • Poor lighting
  • Poor posture
  • Tight deadlines

    Other key points:

  • Computer use is thought to cause posture problems in children because workstations are often not tailored to a child’s smaller body.
  • Health problems brought about by desktop computer use can be exacerbated with laptop computer use.
  • Studies have failed to prove that any measurable radiation, no matter how minimal, emitted from monitors has been responsible for more serious problems such as brain tumors, miscarriages, birth defects, breathing problems, heart palpitations, facial pain, dizziness and electrical sensitivity.
