The
Diner grants shelter from typical menu
by Elizabeth Margerum, Outpost staff
What do you do when the chicken you've defrosted for
dinner has a funky smell and you don't have anything else to
cook?
That's what happened recently, so I sought refuge from
starvation at The Diner in Golden Valley.
This 50's-style diner comes complete with black and white
tile, chrome accents and the ever-present James Dean,
Marilyn Monroe and classic car pictures. Even though the
atmosphere is a bit unoriginal (you've seen one 50's diner
you've seen them all), it still offers a comfortable place
to eat good cheap food.
But this is not just your typical burger joint. The
Dinner has lots of choices for those people who don't like
hamburgers: grilled lemon chicken, T-bone steak or steak and
shrimp. The steak and shrimp, the most expensive item on the
menu, cost only $8.99. There is always a special on the
board and it varies from day to day.
Unfortunately, for the vegetarian-types, The Diner
doesn't have a vast selection of no-meat entrees, just a
garden burger and a vegetarian omelet.
When we got to The Diner the waitress greeted us
immediately and we were free to sit wherever we wanted. She
brought out the menus, which have food varying from The
Original, a basic hamburger, to a T-bone steak dinner.
I had my usual--The Original. This hamburger is 1/4 lb.
of meat served with lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and
special sauce. Of course it comes made-to-order for those of
us who like it our way. And the buns are fresh baked daily.
The hamburgers also come with fresh, hot french fries. The
Original costs $3.99 (cheese $.50 extra).
The food was brought out fast and hot and I couldn't
finish it all. But I couldn't leave with out tasting their
best treats of all&emdash;the milkshakes. They are made with
real ice cream and topped with real whipped cream and a
maraschino cherry. The rich, creamy taste is to die for.
The Diner is located about six miles north of the
University of Nevada off Highway 395 on North Hills Blvd. It
is open everyday for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
