those who think there are no decent restaurants near the
Reno gambling strip, Pho 777 might change your opinion. The
Pho 777 Vietnamese noodle house at 201 East Second Street is
hidden behind casinos, making it difficult to find. On an
abandoned mini strip where I would expect to come across a
pawnshop, I found Pho 777 and decided to take a chance on
it.
The restaurant has a delicatessen-style décor and
surprising freshness and high quality of food. The
restaurant obviously puts much care into every entree,
bringing to mind the cliche about the book and its cover.
The price of dishes ranges from $5 to $6. Pho in
Vietnamese means soup, but this restaurant takes it a step
further. The restaurant has a variety of great noodle dishes
with many types of meat combinations. The menu features two
different preparation styles of Vietnamese noodle
dishes.

Half of the dishes are fresh vegetables and meats placed
atop a large helping of long white noodles. The most
interesting aspect of this half of the dishes is how the
different flavors blend so well. The tender meats, tofu,
lettuce, water chestnuts and cashew pieces allow for a
combination of tastes. The other half of the dishes are a
medley of fresh vegetables, tender meats and chow mein
noodles mixed in a tasty spiced glaze. The aftertaste of the
meal is refreshing because of the subtle overtone of mint
leaves.
The restaurant is decorated with mirrors, 3-D pictures
and fake plants. Patrons are able to see what everyone else
in the restaurant is eating because the tables are
clustered, which also gives it a family-style feel.
The family feeling was strengthened when our waiter came
to take our order with his 3-year-old nephew on his hip. The
service was friendly, and the waiter explained the menu
because of the unfamiliar meats that are not traditionally
American.
The portions are generous but not overfilling. The meal
gave me enough energy to complete my day with a light and
healthy attitude. Take a chance on an unusual location and
enjoy the surprisingly well-prepared dishes at Pho 777.
