Project chess is a winner for kids by Dave McCain
Checkmate! Chess is one of the most popular games in the world. It takes a long time to learn and an even longer time to master -- but anyone can do it. With an open mind and a willingness to try, even the most reluctant can learn to love the game. Nine years ago, a small group of dedicated chess lovers in Reno set out to teach young kids about chess and the benefits of playing the game. The group is called Project Chess. Starting out as an anti-drug campaign, the project grew bigger as more kids wanted to learn.
The creator of the project, Irene Dixon-Damell, wanted to teach chess to kids who had never played before. Irene says the kids loved it. Now, Project Chess is coming to every school in the Washoe area. Irene and others from Project Chess believe chess is more than moving game pieces across a board. For example, chess is valued by professional players for its ability to make the players think carefully, knowing each move could end the game in victory or defeat. The project is fianced by donations. So far, the response to Project Chess and chess in general has been positive. Irene says the Project is booked till January 1999!
