Photo essay: The two faces of Reno

The United States is unique in the world in large part because of its freedoms and complex social structures. Nevada, the sin state, is the most notorious state in the union for its flashy freedoms.

Reno, however, has an abiding, conservative base of which most of the country is unaware. In Reno, residents and tourists at both ends of the social spectrum have to, if only subconsciously, accept coexistence in these unusual circumstances.

This photo essay is a reflection of Reno's social landscape and an investigation of how society conducts itself admidst this dichotomy. The eight photos featured here, taken in Reno and Sparks during the fall of 1998, are highlights of a 40-photograph documentary completed for a class at the University of Nevada, Reno.
