Before going inside, we were shown a nine-minute video produced by the Church to explain the purpose of the temple.

"Temples are at the very center of the spiritual strength of members of the L.D.S. church," the narrator said. "It is a place apart-- the house of the Lord."

We then proceeded to the entrance and put protective booties on our shoes to keep the newly laid carpet clean. As we walked through the doors, one woman commented, "You can still smell the fresh paint."

Pinegar lead us into the baptistry where members of the Church perform baptisms by proxy for deceased ancestors. A font rests on the heads of 12 oxen, representing the 12 Tribes of Israel, Pinegar said. An ornate, 600-pound alabaster chandelier hangs overhead casting brilliant shadows around the room. The marble and stonework came from North Carolina. Two magnificent paintings of Jesus Christ hang to the sides. Behind the font are frosted windows made in Napa Valley, Calif.
