Outstanding academic and community service achievements were recognized Monday at the 33rd annual Women's Night of Honor on the University of Nevada campus.

The awards night held in the Jot Travis Student Union, Alumni Room was organized by the members of Sagens, a women's community service organization on campus.

"It is a night to celebrate women, for our wide ranging talents, for our efforts striving for a great tomorrow and for our dedication to our personal inspirations," said Angella Barr, president of Sagens, in an opening speech.

Nevada State Attorney General, Frankie Sue Del Papa, was keynote speaker for the evening, offering words of encouragement to the award recipients.

"Keep courage in your convictions, whatever those convictions might be" said Del Papa in her speech. " I encourage all of you to continue to be big thinkers, change the things you can, but keep the total perspective in mind."

Del Papa, alumna of the university and Sagens, said events like these inspire students to stay involved in community service.

"When people engage in public service and are recognized for it, I think that it encourages them to stay involved," said Del Papa. "One of the things you want, as far as the future is concerned, is for people to be involved and participate."

Del Papa brought along her own college yearbook, looked at her own classmates and wondered where the women who earned awards at the nights ceremony would end up.

Throughout the night, a variety of group and individual awards were presented for participation in clubs and service projects. The first of the group awards was a Special Recognition Award given to sorority chapter representatives for their community involvement.

Another group award was given to members of the Biochemistry Club, who received the Biochemistry Involvement Reward for their active participation in a science field previously dominated by males.

Individual awards began with the Outstanding Student Award presented to Logan McLean, for her high academic achievement and dedication to community service. An honorary Outstanding Senior Woman award was given to Evelyn Dees, a 50-year, lifetime member of the American Association of University Women.

Tiffany Dibble was presented the Achievement Award for her work in establishing an active student chapter of the American Civil Liberty Union on campus.

The Alpha Zeta Recognition Award, presented by the agriculture fraternity, was given to Tammy Roesler and Jennifer Holder for their high academic and leadership capabilities. The Gerontology Club Recognition Award was presented to Jaime Knesek for her enthusiastic leadership in the Gerontology Club.

The Outstanding Sagen Award was presented to Angella Barr, president of the club, for the changes and improvements she made to the club.

"Angie has taken some risks this year, improving the club for the better, probably forever," said Pat Wilson, Sagens advisor.

Fourteen women were inducted by candle into Cap and Scroll, the women's national honor society which began in1923, after meeting the criteria of having senior status, maintaining at least a 3.25 GPA and having a membership in three clubs.

The top ten senior women were also recognized at the Night of Honor, including Erika DeFlyer, Suzanne DeGiacomo, Catherine Emily Hendrick, Amy Hill, Melissa Morton, Paula Pelleman, Laurie Erin Russell, Puja Sachdev, Kathleen Slaboch and Susan Smith.

"This is a great event because it really shows how involved woman are on the campus," said Barr. "I feel honored that everyone was recognized tonight because it honors us all as women and as a community as it shows how we are changing from the days before World War II when women could not even be ASUN president."
