City Center Pavilion opens doors to Reno by Sean Horejs, Outpost staff
Right across from the National Bowling Stadium in downtown Reno another massive structure seemingly appeared overnight, the City Center Pavilion. Owned by the Silver Legacy Hotel-Casino, the 40,000-square-foot building has been designed to rejuvenate convention business in the downtown core. "The needed space will stimulate more convention and tradeshow business to downtown Reno, and allow us to get creative in hosting special events," Legacy General Manager Gary Carano said. Silver Legacy broke ground on the new tradeshow/exhibit hall last fall and it opened in less than three months. Conventions already booked for the new pavilion will bring more than 23,000 room nights' worth of revenue to Reno's coffers.
According to Legacy officials, the pavilion's visitors won't just be paying conventioners. "It's designed to be a place for community-wide events," said Legacy's public relations manager Deanna Ashby. "It's not just the Silver Legacy, and that's why we called it the City Center Pavilion." The pavilion opened in January, but its coming out party was really the weekend of March 26-28 when the National Collegiate Boxing Championships came to town. Wolf Pack Boxing coach Mike Martino was excited about the new venue.
"I think it's a top-notch facility and I'm happy for the chance to bring boxing back to downtown," he said. His boxers must have liked it, too. Both Joey Gilbert and Ryan Simpson won national championships in their weight classes. The venue will host non-sports events as well, including a May 8 concert, featuring 1980s rock and roll group TOTO.
