Wind from orient - the gala of Asia A photo essay by Zhizhong Li,Outpost staff
But the fourth annual cultural gala presented on campus of University of Nevada, Reno completely changed my feelings. This year's cultural gala featured Asia. It is organized by the International Affairs Club. When people went into the auditorium, they were welcomed by a line of cultural demonstration tables. The gala organized a tour to different cultures. Every guest got a passport before they went into the auditorium. When they passed by each table, they would get a stamp of that country. Many Asian countries were presented, including the People's Republic of China, Japan, the Republic of Indonesia, the Kingdom of Thailand, the Republic of Singapore, the Republic of Korea (south), the Kingdom of Nepal, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, the Republic of the Philippines, etc. Every country had traditional food, handicrafts and other stuffs that reflected its own characters. People tasted different kinds of food and got all the stamps on their passports. The gala also featured traditional performances from different countries. International students from Thailand performed traditional Thai dance. This kind of dance originated and developed from the long history of Thailand. It is for blessing, good life and festivals. Another exciting performance was called "Wotaiko." This is the traditional drum art in Japan. It is more than 1,400 years old. In Japan, taiko has many branches. Different regions have different styles. People in the same community always play taiko for festivals. The taiko player, Rieko Shimbo, came from Japan to Reno five years ago. She teaches people in Reno how to play taiko. At the gala she and her taiko students performed with a taiko she made in Reno. All the people cheered their performance. The Korean martial arts show was another hot performance. Asia is the original place of martial arts. Korean martial arts are a famous branch. People from the Korean martial arts club performed different styles of martial arts with sticks, swords, short knives, etc. The whole gala was full of laughter and applause. People were fond of various foods, and they were impressed with all the performances.
Take a look at the photo essay of this cultural gala and experience the glamour of different cultures.
