I needed a day off from college and work, much like Ferris Bueller needed one from high school. Maybe the stress had me down, but I just wanted to get out of town. I only had a day to get away from earthly duties, and I was looking for a fairly inexpensive fun-filled experience. A trip down U.S. Highway 395 fit the bill. So I enticed my fiance, Debbie, to hop in the car heading south from Reno. We had a calling!

Taking a drive down Highway 395 to the vicinity of Carson Valley can provide the perfect outing for anyone. Debbie and I took off on a recent Saturday, conquering all these activities in one day: The Chocolate Nugget Candy Factory in the morning, The Cracker Box for breakfast/lunch, a walk in Genoa looking at old buildings, a relaxing time at Walley's Hot Springs, a drink in the high country at the Cutthroat Saloon, and dinner at the Overland Hotel in Gardnerville. It took us about nine hours and 150 miles of driving, costing about $50 to 60 per person.

But you don't have to be as ambitious. Cutting out any one of these activities should not make you feel like you missed the point of an outing, which is fun and relaxation.
