The mountains surrounding the south end of Lake Tahoe provide a beautiful backdrop to the lush open meadows comprising the Carson Valley. Here worries melt away like ice cream on hot summer days.

Genoa is a cute little town at the base of the Sierra Range. Genoa boasts more than 20 buildings in the National Register of Historical Places. Genoa was Nevada's first settlement, dating back to 1851, and was a county seat until 1916. The Pony Express stopped there during its 1860-61 run.

The Genoa Courthouse Museum, open daily 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., (702) 782-4325, is nice for viewing Washoe Indian baskets and old furniture and finding out about the area's early settlers. Stop by and get a snack at the Genoa Country Store, built in 1862. The store has a wooden Indian just like you would imagine a country store having.

To get there: From the Cracker Box, head one block west to Highway 395, and take a left going south. When you get past town and Highway 50, take a right on Jack's Valley Road, which will become Foothill Road. It's about 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Carson City to get to Genoa.

From Reno, head south on Highway 395 through Carson City to Jack's Valley Road, where you take a right. It is just under an hour of travel time from downtown Reno.
