Debbie and I love Walley's Hot Springs Resort, which is just south of Genoa. The setting for a resort couldn't be more ideal. The grounds are beautifully maintained. The staff is cordial, and the facilities are awesome. The staff hands you a locker key and a fresh towel the moment you walk into the lobby and pay the $12 fee for all day use.

Walley's is a show-off resort, having six mineral pools that range from a modest 96 degrees to a very hot 104 degrees. A pool for those who want to swim or take a dip in cooler waters (about 75-80) is next to the tubs. What's nice about having six tubs is that usually, you can have one for yourself. The day I went the place was almost empty, but that's not always the case.

I have promised myself many times to take a massage, but they're offered by appointment only and aren't cheap, $30 for one half hour or $55 for an hour. If the tubs aren't enough for you, go work out in the weight room, which has various exercise machines, free weights and a treadmill. Walley's also has dry and wet saunas. The lobby has clothing items and a refrigerator full of drinks available for purchase.

After a few hours at Walley's my tension is always gone.

Walley's also provides nightly accommodations, $85 and up, as well as a deli open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The resort is open 7 a.m. to 9:45 p.m., Monday through Friday and 8 a.m. to 9:45 p.m. on weekends. For information and reservations call: 1-800-628-7831 or (702) 782-8155.

This pool is a comfortable 99 degrees. Photo by Arthur Pines.

If you want to wait until later in your day trip for a dip in hot springs, an inexpensive alternative to Wally's is Grover Hot Springs in Markleeville.

To get there from Genoa: Continue south on Foothill Road through the main four- way stop in Genoa. Walleys is a 1.5-mile drive and on the left. The address is 2001 Foothill Road.

From Reno, go through Carson City on Highway 395 and take right at Jack's Valley Road. Walley's is just less than an hours drive from downtown Reno.
