If you bypass Wally's seeking a slightly less opulent venture, you might select Grover Hot Springs. Located about four miles behind the Cutthroat Saloon, Grover Hot Springs State Park is a grassy valley enclosed by shear mountains of the Sierra Nevada. It reminds me of the Swiss Alps but is more intimate. The Hot Springs has a regular swimming pool and a huge hot spring

wading pool. One side of the hot pool is 102 degrees and the other side is 104 degrees. For $4 dollars, you can stay as long as you like during operating hours: Monday through Friday 2 to 9 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. (916) 694-2248.

This State Park is popular for walking, cross-country skiing and camping in different seasons. Remember, Grover Hot Springs is in mountain country and gets cold, so bring warm clothes. Also, Grover does not furnish towels like Walley's, but it does have showers.

To get there: From Reno, take Highway 395 south about 50 minutes to Highway 88 west in Minden. Drive 10 or so minutes to the Woodfords junction and take a left on 89 south toward

Markleeville, which is a 10-minute drive from the junction. Once you come into town, you will see a sign on right for Grover Hot Springs, take a right following the sign and keep right. Drive to end of road, which is about four miles. Altogether, it is about 70 miles to Markleeville from downtown Reno.

From Genoa, take Foothill Road continuing south along the mountains away from Carson City and Highway 395 until it intersects Highway 88. Take a right and go to Highway 89, where you a take left toward Markleeville, which is about 20 minutes from Genoa.
