Highway 88

By Jerri Conrad, Outpost staff

It's spring break and the weather is great. The kids and I decided to head out on Highway 88. We took 395 south past Carson City, to the Highway 88 junction.

Highway 88 twists and turns though Amador County, Calif. The drive is peaceful and the scenery in the Sierra is spectacular. The highway passes by Kirkwood Ski Resort, Caples Lake Resort and Silver Lake.

Historic Jackson, Calif. was our first stop, after picking up our tour guide, my sister and her kids.Jackson's history is, as is most of Amador County's, rich with people who sought their fortune in gold. Jackson was originally a gold camp in 1848, known as Botilleas (the first settlers tossed their bottles in a creek which runs through town). However, due to a fire that destoyed the town in 1862, many of the buildings only date back to 1862.

The group was hungry, so we stopped for lunch at Mel & Fayes Diner, Home of the Moo Burger. The Moo Burger has two ground beef patties with cheese and is garnished with everything, including their special sauce. It comes with fries. In addition to burgers, Mel's has soups, salads, shakes and a great kid's menu.

After lunch we picked up something sweet at Cafe Max located on Main Street. They are a self described Swiss Bakery & European Cafe. Cafe Max serves lunch, pastries, smoothies and espresso. From Max's we walked down Main Street to Court Street.

On Court Street we found Jackson's courthouse, built in 1893 after the original was burned in the fire. At the corner of Court and Church Street is St. Patrick's Catholic Church which was built in 1868. On the opposite corner is United Methodist Church, some of which was built in 1869.

Just around the corner from Court and Church Streets is the County Museum. The museum is a beautiful, old family home of the Jackson namesake and holds a full history. The yard is a lovely picnic area that overlooks Jackson.

The highlight of the trip was the St. Sava's Serbian Orthodox Church. St. Sava's is the mother church of the Serbian Orthodox denomination in North America. It was built in 1894. The church stands on a hill, surrounded by a cemetery.

In addition to historic sites, Jackson is filled with antique shops, speciality shops and restaurants.
