Sushi Teri brings Japan to Reno by Denise Moyle, Outpost staff
Sushi Teri may not have large flashing signs and the elegance of some of Reno's finer restaurants but what it does have is really, really, good food, and a lot of it. The menu features such items as tempera vegetables and teriyaki chicken as well as premium sushi and specialty rolls. Basically, there is something here for everyone. I recommend the all-you-can-eat lunch for $13.95. It is the best value for your money. But be sure to get there before early afternoon. After 3 p.m., the all-you-can-eat price jumps to $18.95. Last Thursday, I returned to Sushi Teri with one of my sushi partners and like usual I sampled the all-you-can-eat and started with the spicy California roll. My friend had the same. We agreed that it was as good as always; the fish and the seaweed were fresh and the rice was well prepared. But be careful how hot you order it. Spicy has just a little tang, but it can be ordered all the way up to DOA. I actually saw a man start sweating before he had finished the first bite. I rounded out my lunch with a deep-fried crystal shrimp hand roll, a scallop (Jason) hand roll and one of the specialty rolls called a Choto as well as some salmon. Most of the long and hand rolls have different names, but the menu tells you what is in each. For those of you who have never had Sushi and really don't feel comfortable eating raw fish, don't panic. The term sushi refers to the way the rice is prepared, not the fish. Most of the fish is steamed or cooked. Some of the fish, like the scallops and the crystal shrimp, are deep fired. Almost all sushi items come with rice and at least a little bit of seaweed. The long and hand rolls are wrapped in seaweed, but some of the individual sushi pieces, like salmon and crab, just come on a roll of rice. If it is your first time with sushi, I definitely recommend going to Sushi Teri and perhaps taking a friend with a little experience. But if none of your friends are around just pop in, sit at the bar and tell the sushi chef its your first time. Both of you will have a good time. The chefs are great. They are pleasant, fun, helpful and attentive, and it's an experience to watch them prepare your meal in front of you. I never sit long without being asked what I would like next. The atmosphere is pleasant, but there are few decorations. Expect to feel a bit crowded; this is not a big place. Mostly, Sushi Teri is just about good, fresh food. If it's your first time, sit at the bar and enjoy. If you're a regular, then maybe I will see you there.
