Tuesday night clubbing: Why Not? by Charlie Hammond, Outpost staff
As usual, the further the semester progresses, the earlier in the week I begin to go out. Regrettably, there isn't much happening in this town on Tuesday. That is, until a friend dragged me to Rodeo Rock. The name alone made me skeptical. But my fears were ill-founded. Though the name Rodeo Rock, which changed back from Universal Music Hall last month, tends to conjure images of big hats and boots (especially in Nevada), its scene as The Club on Tuesday is anything but. Instead of Stetsons and Wranglers, I found college-aged partygoers, hipsters, even the occasional glow-stick-toting raver. And the music ain't Garth, Reba or the Dixie Chicks. DJ Don spins a lot of fantastic House mixed with a liberal amount of Hip-Hop and a dash of Trance. Those who enjoy club music will hear something they like. Radio station KRZQ does a live remote. If you're like me and a tad claustrophobic, you needn't worry. The Club's spacious interior and varied layout allows just about any visitor to find a comfortable niche, whether that be the immense dance floor, shooting pool or just sitting at a table talking with friends. No need to bathe in other people's sweat here, although it can be crowded at the peak of the evening. There is plenty of eye candy. The light setup is one of the best in town. No one likes to wait long stretches to get refreshments in a club, especially after paying a cover. But with The Club's two fully-stocked bars, you won't have trouble getting a drink. Every bartender that served me was quick and gracious. Cocktail waitresses also were on patrol for thirsty patrons. There's a portable bar at the door that offers a variety of bottled beers &endash; imported and domestic &endash; for $2 &endash; 4. The Club opens at 9 at night but doesn't get rolling until about 10:30. Cover is $3. For those with a slim budget, arrive early to take advantage of 10 cent drafts that pour from a keg of domestic beer. The deal lasts only as long as the keg. Twenty-five bucks will go a long way at The Club at Rodeo Rock. On a Tuesday night in Reno, you won't find a better time away from term papers and study groups. For those of you who like "Stetsons" and "Wranglers," Rodeo Rock reverts to its country music namesake Wednesday through Sunday, but I must admit I've never been there. Take that as you may.
