Broadway is coming to Reno. This year the "Broadway Comes to Reno" series at the Pioneer Center will feature five productions instead of the usual four. The number of total performances will double from 12 to 24.

The past success of the "Broadway" series has prompted organizers to include a Saturday matinee for audience members who can't attend evening performances.

One highlight of this year's series is the musical comedy "Victor/Victoria." Reno resident Toni Tennille, Grammy-award winning recording artist, will play the lead role. The four Reno performances, Sept. 3-5, will be the world premiere for this "Victor/Victoria" cast.

Another highlight is the hit musical "Rent" which will play in Reno before moving on to San Francisco and Sacramento. "Rent" has swept all the major theater awards and won a Pulitzer Prize. It will appear for eight performances Nov. 10-14.

"We're thrilled to be getting two equity productions in "Rent" and 'Victor/Victoria' this year," John Shelton, Pioneer Center executive director, said. "This means we'll be building upon the quality we already have, enhancing the series with even more quality performers, sets and production values overall."

The other productions featured in this years series are "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" staring Jo Anne Worley, the classic musical "The King and I," and "Big."

Season tickets to all the performances went on sale May 3. The premiere season package provides tickets to all the shows and starts at $175. The deluxe season package does not include "Victor/Victoria" and can be purchased for $140. All other tickets will go on sale about two months before each performance. Tickets can be purchased at the Pioneer Center Box Office or by calling 1-800-714-5331.

"This season is comprised of so many exceptional shows that we expect it to sell out even faster than it has in previous years," Shelton said.
