Online job resources

I was sitting in class daydreaming about graduation and the future when -- BAM! -- it hit me. I will have to work. I will have to go out in the real world, find a job and work. I have attended classes for four years and spent thousands of dollars to learn what I need to know for a job but not how to find it. Luckily, several websites offer help for both the college grad and the career-changer when hunting for the perfect job.

  • HOTJOBS.COM is one of my favorites. It is one of the few sites where I found a job meeting all the criteria of my personal search. Hotjobs also has an option to post your resume online for potential employers to view and lists several other links to find help in your job hunt. Its design is clear and basic, and the site is easy to navigate. This is definitely a site to bookmark.
  • CAREERMOSAIC.COM is an extensive website to assist in finding jobs, writing resumes and interviewing. The resume center is extremely helpful and gives numerous examples of resumes, cover letters and interviewing strategies. It is easy to navigate and has a quick search engine that allows you to search by job, location and company. Careermosaic has a basic design that does not distract you from your task.
  • COLLEGEGRAD.COM is an excellent site targeted for college graduates but useful to others as well. It offers resources that take you step-by-step to find a job. Collegegrad offers a unique resource -- what to do after you have been offered a job. The navigation is clear, the site downloads quickly and the design is creative. It offers several searches that allow you to check for entry-level positions or experienced positions. It also allows you to search each job filed on the database or conduct an advanced search by job type/level, location, category or keyword.
  • MONSTER.COM is a popular career site that contains a number of resources. It has an excellent search engine and an extensive database. The resume center helps you build your resume online so you can post it for potential employers to view. Monster is easy to navigate and offers several options for your job search. The design theme is obviously monsters, which adds a cute backdrop when seriously looking for a job.
  • NATIONJOB.COM offers several resources in relation to resumes, references and interviews. The site has a quick search engine, however it seems to cater toward big-city jobs. Its design is clean and professional, and the site is full of information. Overall, Nationjob is a wonderful reference but not efficient if you are trying to find a job in a small town.
  • CAREERPATH.COM allows you to search for a job by company, category, region and keyword. It also allows you to search by newspaper postings or online postings. While their search engine is broad their resume center is narrow. Careerpath only allows you to post a resume and it offers no resources on how to build one. It has a bright design and clear navigation. The site also has resources for employers looking for applicants. Overall, the site is wonderful when looking for a job but not if you need help with a resume.
  • DICE.COM has a fast search engine and offers hundreds of job, but they are not well organized. The resume center gives step-by-step instructions on how to post your online resume but does not give any advice on writing the resume. Its design is irritating but the site still has an edge -- it offers jobs that may not be posted on other websites. I was able to find jobs on this site that were not on other sites. The search engine has an extensive database but does not break it up in an easy-to-browse format. You could spend hours searching through jobs you are not qualified for. Overall, Dice is an informative site but hard to use.
  • JOB-HUNT.ORG is a site full of links to other resources. Its design is confusing -- there is so much information it is difficult to know where to begin. It does not contain its own search engine but has links to several, some of which are on the sites previously mentioned. If you want to be bombarded with information and ideas about where to go to find a job, Job-hunt will definitely suit you.
