Reno's
cheap dates
Looking to get out, but
strapped for cash? Here's links to things to do under
$20.
- NEVADA
MUSEUM OF ART - The Nevada Museum of Art
offers a useful website. It lists current
exhibits and upcoming attractions and collections. It
also provides information for anyone interested in
volunteering
or becoming a member. But if you just want a little
artistic culture, then the NMA is the place to be. For $5
for adults, $3 for students and only $1, for children the
Nevada Museum of Art is a steal. But if you just can't
fathom paying to see an art exhibit go on Sunday from
noon to 4 p.m. when admission is free.
- RENO
BLACKJACKS PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL - So art
isn't really your scene. Don't fret, sports fan, there
are things for you, too. The Reno BlackJacks baseball
team has a web site that calls to even the most die-hard
baseball fans. A schedule
of games as well as a merchandise
vendors are all within the click of a button, not to
mention a full team
roster with stats and pictures on all of the players
and coaches. Home games are $5 for general admission and
$10 for VIP seating.
If that doesn't say "Take me out to the ball game," I
don't know what will.
- RENO-SPARKS
THEATER COALITION - If you are looking to
start your Broadway career, this is the place to go. With
a complete listing of all of the local theaters and their
shows, you surely won't be missing any auditions or
performances. And while the site does not list the price
for any of the upcoming shows, it gives phone numbers for
all of the local theater companies. But I would not worry
to much about the budget either. In my experience the
theaters in Reno have been very reasonably priced. Well
under $20.
- WASHOE
COUNTY GOLF COURSE - So you want to get
active. Well, visit the Washoe County Golf Course. Even
if you do not know how to golf, it is still fun. Go and
try out your best impersonation of "Happy Gilmore," but
look here first. This site has a map
with directions to the golf course and detailed
information on all 18
holes, including handicap and
par. Green fees start at $12 and climb as high as $24.
And unless you want to walk the course you'll have to
rent a cart, which is $10.50 for nine holes and $21 for
18 holes. While this is not exactly the cheapest date you
can have, it might just be the most fun. If this is still
too high, check out Brookside Golf Course in south east
Reno off McCarran Boulevard, unfortunately I could not
find their web site.
- NATIONAL
CHAMPIONSHIP AIR RACES - Check out this page
for information on the Reno Air Races held every year in
September at the Stead Airport. It has some really nice
pictures and great links
to other aviation sights. It also has a complete listing
of official Air Race merchandise
and history as well as a daily schedule and racing
classes. The price of admission
depends on the day, but Sunday is the only day that costs
$20 for adults. For cheaper rates come on Thursday,
Friday or Saturday. Or look for the really cheap
seats at the west end of the runway.
