Library References

  • The Internet Public Library - This site was set up and is maintained by librarians. According to their Mission Statement, the IPL provides the very best information resources by listing quality web sites relating to books. They are organized using the Dewey Decimal system, listed according to topic. For example, under Youth, Literature, British Literature, there are lists of authors with links to their home pages, or pages about them. I looked up Roald Dahl and even got to read some of his poetry on-line.
  • Library Spot - This is a free site that mainly offers links to other libraries on-line. It also organizes online resources into categories. For instance, if you want to look for a good online encyclopedia, clicking that link under the Reference Desk will take you to a page with nine different sites and small descriptions of what the site has to offer. This is basically a user-friendly, literary search engine.
  • Library of Congress - The contributors to this site have set up five main areas to give the Library of Congress experience some life on the computer screen. There is access to documents, photos, movies and sound files about American history in the "American Memory" section. The "THOMAS" section gives the public access to full-text copies of all current legislation before the House and the Senate. Next, the "Exhibitions" section gives Northern Nevadans the opportunity to look at and through previously and currently displayed collections without going to Washington. The site also offers resources for other libraries and research materials. Add to this a search engine through LOC catalogues and information about the library itself and a person could spend hours just trying to get around.
  • The Internet Law Library - So let's say you want to find out about Human Rights practices in Djibouti? Their treaties with the United States? Their laws by jurisdiction? Those are just part of the information that can be found at this site. It is sponsored by the House of Representatives on the premise that the public should have access to the United States law, the laws of other nations and other law resources available on the Internet.
  • Washoe County Library System - This site offers access to the Washoe Information Terminal System, which allows browsers to search online through the library catalogue, Infotrac and other systems normally only available inside the library. With more than 1,000 links updated regularly, the site also provides information about the Washoe County Library system and the programs and classes they offer, as well as giving links to other Internet resources.
  • University of Nevada, Reno Library - The best resource offered through this site is access to the WolfPAC Library catalogue and to the NEON network for the whole Nevada University system. Other than that, it is a pretty basic site with information about the library itself, how to use the library and a link to an Alta Vista search engine for the Web.
