Mountain biking in Reno/Tahoe

  • RENO MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS - This site is provided courtesy of a Reno area bike shop. The graphics are great. The maps are better - real topos. There are several rides with difficulty ratings and detailed directions. This is the only site I know of dedicated to riding in the Reno area. Two small complaints: it only covers a few rides and the page is large format so it may require some scrolling.
  • TAHOE MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS - This is the other half of the Reno trails site, again, thanks to the folks at Great Basin Bicycles. The trail descriptions and maps are just as good here, and the same drawbacks apply.
  • MORE MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAILS - This site is huge and has directions and descriptions for more trails than you'll have time to ride all season. It highlights more than a dozen just in the Tahoe area. Most are within a couple of hours' drive from Reno. The list has been compiled by a rider in the Bay Area, and some of the descriptions are better than others. I offer it to you for its utility and variety, not its flash.
  • TAHOE NATIONAL FOREST - Find out more about the area at this site. It covers everything from contact numbers to vegetation, including a section on MTB (the trails described are covered better elsewhere). A great quick reference for the Tahoe region. Keep in mind, this national forest covers the areas north and west of Lake Tahoe. See the El Dorado or Toiyabe links below for the areas south and east of the lake.
  • EL DORADO NATIONAL FOREST - This site covers the areas to the south and west of Lake Tahoe. It covers basic information you'll need to know when you're planning a trip, but it's not as complete as the Tahoe site.
  • TOIYABE NATIONAL FOREST - Find out more about the area at this site. It covers everything from contact numbers to vegetation. A great quick reference for Toiyabe. Keep in mind, this national forest covers the areas on the Nevada side of the border. For more information about the Tahoe region, check out the Tahoe and El Dorado sites.
  • MTB RIDE PHOTOS AT SUNSET - For a little eye candy, check out these photos taken in our very own backyard - Lake Tahoe. If this site doesn't inspire you to get out and ride, I can't help. They load a bit slowly, but it's worth the wait.
  • EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT MTB - Whether you're hoping to improve your technique, find out how to fix a broken chain on the trail, pick an energy bar or avoid the dreaded biker's impotence, this is the place to check. Thrive online has put this page together. The advice is concise and accurate. The site is easy to navigate and nice to look at, and it has advice for every level of rider.
  • IMBA HOME PAGE - The International Mountain Biking Association is the biggest and most influential MTB advocacy group out there. Its site has an extensive library of articles covering everything from low impact riding to organizing an advocacy campaign.
  • RULES OF THE TRAIL - For anyone who is out there getting dirty, knowing the rules is essential. Following this set of guidelines from the folks at IMBA will keep trails open to MTBrs. If you think this is a joke, just wait until your epic ride gets closed.
  • NORBA HOME PAGE - This is the place to go for competition and race information. The National Off-Road Bicycle Association sanctions most major professional and amateur competitions in this country. Their site offers one-stop shopping for dates, results and what you need to get started racing.
  • THE DICTIONARY OF MOUNTAIN BIKE SLANG - This site is a lot of fun, especially for the uninitiated. What it lacks in graphics, it makes up for in originality. Just don't try to use too many of these phrases in one sentence or everybody will know you're a fred.
