Other
events on the Western States Trail
by Jon Gubman, Outpost contributor
Each spring, the Western States Trail, the the trail that
makes up the first section of Watson Loop, is home to a
100-mile run, which starts in Squaw Valley and ends in
Auburn. The run is strictly invitational, and I understand
that selected runners must complete at least eight hours of
trail maintenance to be eligible.
Norm Klein, president of the Western States Endurance Run
Foundation, organizes and sponsors the event and can be
reached at: Western States Endurance Run Foundation, Rancho
Cordova, Calif., (916) 638-1161. The run occurs on the last
weekend in June, and this year is scheduled for June 27.

The Western States Trail Foundation each year puts on the
Tevis Cup Ride, a 100-mile equestrian endurance ride. For
the past 40 years, the ride has taken place during the full
moon in July or August. Beginning at 5 a.m., 250 riders and
their horses compete for 24 hours on the 100-mile course,
which starts at Truckee and ends at Auburn. Horses are
subjected to close veterinary inspection, and about 55
percent of contestants finish the ride.
This year, the ride is scheduled for Aug. 8, 1998. More
information can be obtained by writing or calling The
Western States Trail Foundation, 701 High Street, Suite 228C
Auburn, Calif., 95603 (916) 823-7282, fax (916) 823-7901.
