Rancho San Rafael Park is the most often used park in the city of Reno. Located just northwest of the university, Rancho San Rafael hosts a variety of events throughout the year. The Wilbur D. May Museum, found in the heart of the park, houses a permanent exhibit of Reno's past and hosts traveling exhibits, such as the "Snakes Alive!" exhibit that came to Reno in early spring. Another main attraction at Rancho San Rafael is the Great Basin Adventure, which features a log flume ride in the summer. Right behind the museum is the Wilbur D. May Arboretum, where visitors can observe the natural flora of the Truckee Meadows. The large grass field north of the museum is home to the Greater Reno Balloon Races in September, where more than 100 hot air ballon pilots from across the nation converge on Reno in an attempt to win one of the largest prizes in balloon racing. The large pavillions in the southwest corner of the park can hold over 200 people for company picnics and family gatherings. Across McCarran Boulevard are four softball fields, which are used for local tournaments.
