Idlewild Park was voted the best park in Reno for 1998 by
Gazette-Journal and News & Review readers. It offers
something for everyone, especially since this year the
city's ice skating rink is there. One of the largest parks
in the area, Idlewild has long been a favorite place to go.
Idlewild swimming pool is constantly packed in the summer,
little ones enjoy the miniature amusement park rides and the
rushing waters of the Truckee River offer a serene get-away
spot. The Reno Municipal Rose Garden is a special place in
the city where one can enjoy the beauty of flowers in the
spring. Weddings are also performed in the Rose Garden; call
the Reno parks and Recreation at 334-2260 to reserve it.
Another special attraction that opened recently is the City
of Reno skateboard park. Area teens lobbied for many years
to get the skate park built, and it has finally been
constructed. The skate park keeps the teens out of downtown
and gives them a safer place to practice their moves. The
mini amusement park has four rides and a concessions stand
that are open during the summer. The children's playground
is right next to the rides. Call Reno Parks and Recreation
at 329-6008 for more information about the rides. The main
barbecue area is a modern art-like structure east of the
swimming pool. It is quite unique, but offers ample space to
have a large gathering. Finally, there is Idlewild Lake, a
medium-sized pond in the southeast corner of the park that
is home to hundreds of geese. In fact, it is hard to walk
around Idlewild Park without stepping in goose droppings.
But that doesn't scare away most visitors, who are looking
more for a good time and a beautiful, quiet retreat.

Wingfield Park is the only park located right in downtown
Reno. It sits on an island in the middle of the Truckee
River, but it is prone to being washed out when the Truckee
floods. However, Wingfield is a popular park because of the
Wingfield Amphitheater, where many local theatrical and
musical performances take place. This past summer the
Wingfield Amphitheater hosted "Theater in the Park," a
series of performances by the International Thespian
Society, Gothic North Theater, Reno Little Theater and
Bruka. Wingfield Park also hosts many other community-wide
special events throughout the year. Across Arlington Street
on the west is Barbara Bennett Park, although most people
consider it to be part of Wingfield Park. Barbara Bennett
Park offers tennis and basketball courts, a playground and
importantly, restrooms. A colorful mural lines the south
wall of the basketball courts. Although Wingfield
Park/Barbara Bennett Park is not large, it is still among
the most popular and well known of Reno parks.
Location: The main park entrance is on Arlington
Street, by the amphitheater. Another entrance is located on
First Street. Barbara Bennett Park sits right on Arlington
and offers parking for Wingfield Park as well.
