Northern Nevada is hi-tech's new home. While it's not the bay area's Silicon Valley yet, northern Nevada is banking on a new industry. Gaming soon might not be northern Nevada's bread and butter. But tourism authorities in the recreation area are using the power of the Internet to drum-up business. Meanwhile, companies like Great Basin, Amazon.com and iGo are counting cash- locally. But there could be traffic as northern Nevada searches for the on-ramp to the information superhighway. Will local educators be able to train a new, technology-based employee? Is northern Nevada prepared to handle the influx of Internet-related business? Outpost staff and contributors take a closer look as northern Nevadans welcome hi-tech business.


Is northern Nevada ready?

Northern Nevada is wired for the new millennium. High-speed Internet connections are underfoot and local leaders are attracting hi-tech business. But can our area handle this building boom?

New educational challenges

It's still the three R's, but they now include an "I" for Internet. Washoe County schools are molding a new student. This millennium student is supposed to be computer savvy and ready to enter northern Nevada's hi-tech job market. But is this super student obtainable? What challenges are northern Nevada teachers facing?

iGo: A cyberspace success story

Their coffee sucks less, at least that's what local billboards touting iGo.com say. The Internet success story set-up shop in northern Nevada just a few years ago. Now it's a publically-traded company and really going places on the Web.
