Pack slugger Price wins national honor by Zack Hall, Outpost Staff After slamming five home runs in four games last week, Pack slugger Don Price accomplished something no other Nevada player can lay claim to. The junior was tabbed by the Collegiate Baseball as its National Player of the Week for his efforts. In addition, Price garnered the same award from the Big West Conference.
Pack coach Gary Powers said his first baseman is deserving of the honor. "It is a tremendous honor for Donny, but I'll tell you right now that he has earned it," Powers said. "He has been hot for the last week, for the last month. He really has carried us on his back." The Pack has won eight straight games with Price homering in all but two of those wins. During the junior's 16-game hitting tear, the Pack is 12-3. He has four multiple-home run games in the stretch. "Any time you have a player in your program get a national honor, it says something about how much respect your program gets," Powers said. Price needs to go yard eight times in Nevada's last eight games to tie Andy Dominique's single-season home run record of 30. If he keeps up his current slugging percentage mark, he will break Dominique's record of .788. He needs 19 RBIs to break Dominique's single season mark. All of Dominique's marks were set in 1997 during his senior season. This is the fifth time this season that a Nevada player has been honored by the Big West. Lyle Overbay has been named Player of the Week twice while Joe Inglett was tabbed once. Freshman pitcher George Moran was honored as the Pitcher of the Week earlier this season.
