Season about to begin for the UNR ski team
"It's important for the athletes to get as many ski days as possible before the seasons starts," Head Coach Tom Arnstein said. As in previous seasons, the alpine team will have most of its training at North Star, while the nordic team will train at Tahoe Donner. However, at this time of the year when the snow cover can change on a daily basis, both teams are training at various resorts. Arnstein said that the alpine team is having its slalom training at Boreal, while the giant slalom training is taking place at Sugar Bowl. "The alpine team is in a fortunate situation to have the opportunity to practice with various ski clubs at different ski resorts," Arnstein said. He said the team is also making "guest appearances" with the ski team from Squaw Valley. Arnstein and assistant coach Luis Cristobal are on the slopes six days of the week and require the athletes to have at least four skiing sessions per week. Arnstein said that the athletes' schedules make it impossible to have the whole team train together, and that the best solution to this problem is to set up dedicated hours where he or Cristobal are available to the athletes. The skiers will then carpool to the resort, ski until they're satisfied and go back to other commitments. This year's ski team has 15 alpine skiers and 18 nordic skiers. Unlike the alpine team, the nordic skiers are having more "organized" workouts in the sense that all the athletes are training at dedicated times. Nordic Coach Jeff Schoss says this is possible because the nordic team has a younger crew with more flexible class schedules. The team rents a van for the season, enabling them to travel up as a team. The nordic team is altering between Tahoe Donner and Auburn Ski Club, and Schloss says this provides a good mix. "Tahoe Donner provides more tracks in terms of kilometers, while Auburn Ski Club has more variation in the terrain," he said
