Baseball season may just be getting underway at Nevada but it is already time for football at the University of Nevada.

Last week was the opening of spring practice for the football squad. It is new coach Chris Tormey's first opportunity to get a look at what he will have to deal with this fall. Besides evaluating the Wolf Pack's talent, Tormey must also prepare the squad for its move into the Western Athletic Conference next season.

After coaching at Idaho the past four seasons, Tormey wants to redefine the qualities that Nevada football displayed throughout most of the past decade.

"We need to re-establish the work ethic and toughness that will give us a chance to be successful," Tormey said. "Every year during spring football, one of our goals will be to improve fundamentally and to just get better in our techniques across the board. We're installing new systems on both sides of the ball so there will be lots of teaching and new schemes to learn, new responsibilities and some position changes."

Nevada does have 31 lettermen returning, but only three returning starters on each side of the ball. With so few starters returning from last year's squad that finished with a 3-8 record, there are a lot of questions for next season.

Those questions began to be this month, as Nevada holds its 15 spring practices, the number allowed by the NCAA.

"We're going to find out a lot more these next 15 days," Tormey said. "A lot of these guys haven't played very much and so it's going to be a real learning experience for them and I expect them to get better every time they come out."
